Green & gold decorated tray
Tray decorated in Arte Povera style
Description
Practiced throughout Europe in the 18th century, the Arte Povera technique remains one of the symbols of Venice, where it originated. Due to the high demand for lacquered furniture from Asia, which could not meet the demand, 18th-century Venetian artisans turned to the technique of "Arte Povera" or "Lacca Povera" (poor lacquer) to produce furniture more quickly and at a lower cost, imitating the highly sought-after lacquer of that time.
In practice, the patterns were carefully cut from paper engravings, then glued onto the pre-painted wooden surface and enhanced with watercolor.
